More than a soundboard
Drive mode
Start the engine, press the pedal and shift through six gears. The tachometer and speed follow each car's real 0–100 km/h time and top speed.
Live engine sound
The engine note is generated in real time from each engine's firing order, cylinder banks and exhaust lengths, so a flat-plane V8 and a cross-plane V8 really do sound different.
Your garage
Save favorites, compare sounds back to back and show your friends what a 9,000 rpm V10 sounds like.

Frequently asked questions
Can I listen to car sounds without the app?
Yes. Every car on this site has its start-up, idle, rev and drive clips playable in the browser. The app adds Drive mode: a gas pedal, a 6-speed manual and an engine sound generated live as you rev and shift.
Is the Car Sounds app free?
The app is free to download on iPhone, iPad and Android. Some cars and features are part of an optional Pro upgrade.
Which car has the best engine sound?
It is subjective, but high-revving naturally aspirated engines with many cylinders, like the Lexus LFA V10 and the Ferrari V12s, top most lists. Our best sounding cars guide explains the picks and lets you compare them side by side.
Why do different engines sound so different?
Mostly cylinder count, firing order and crankshaft design, which set the rhythm and pitch of the exhaust pulses, then the exhaust and intake hardware, which filter them. Turbochargers also act as a muffler.
